building our future together

Māla o ka Pono is a restorative permaculture project that has been developing a 27-acre property in Haiku, Maui since September 2020. Permaculture (permanent sustainable agriculture) involves so many things, but permaculture can be said to be any agricultural system in which “the whole function of each part is realized.” This includes the Human part of agriculture. For Humans to fully realize themselves we need to be surrounded by a thriving environment of people, plants and animals. Our main goal is to hold space for our community to grow and evolve as people, while restoring our environment and our connection to nature. We believe combining agriculture with music and community gatherings is the best way to get more people actively involved with each other and our environment. An active population is a healthy population whether we are talking about soil microbes or people. We seek to grow and care for this land while building community connection through art, music, education and sustainable agriculture.

Syntropy

The universal nature of interconnected, symbiotic relating.

“Syntropic Farming is an innovative approach to regenerative agriculture which allows us to create dynamic, successional, and economically viable ecosystems that restore degraded soil biodiversity.  By understanding and respecting nature's complex system, Syntropic Farming imitates the natural regeneration of forests and provides a harmonious integration of our food production systems.”

Process based agriculture

We maintain crops at different heights, called stratas, to recreate the natural conditions found in a forest.  By continuously feeding lots of biomass back to the earth, we build soil and establish a healthy microbiome.

We implement JADAM and Korean Natural Farming into our food forest to support the plants' own fertility so we are not as reliant on store bought pesticides or fertilizers.  By establishing healthy soil we can grow nutrient-dense foods for generations.
